John P. Wefel
John P. Wefel, Professor Emeritus of Physics at Louisiana State University (LSU), passed away on March 30, 2025, at Jefferson Healthcare Hospital in Port Townsend, Washington. He was 80 years old.
John was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Paul and Hilda Wefel. He attended college at Valparaiso University, Indiana, the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and completed graduate studies at Washington University, Missouri. His career started at the US Naval Research Laboratory, leading to the University of Chicago, and ending at LSU.
At Valparaiso, John met the love of his life, Sandra. They first met in the 7:30 AM computer class and shared countless adventures in life together.
He joined LSU in 1982, where he quickly became a respected leader in his department and beyond. His commitment to fostering scientific inquiry and nurturing young minds earned him the respect and admiration of all who had the privilege of working with him.
Dr. Wefel’s lifelong commitment to the study and advancement of cosmic ray physics made him a beloved figure in the academic community. Throughout his distinguished career at LSU, John inspired countless students with his passion for science and his dedication to teaching. Known for his sharp intellect and warm, approachable nature, he was a mentor, colleague, and friend to many. His work in experimental high-energy physics and cosmic ray research contributed to numerous advancements in the field and earned John many awards for his accomplishments, the latest being his induction into the LSU College of Science Hall of Distinction on March 28, 2025.
John's work took him and Sandra to many locations around the globe. They spent many summers in Erice, Italy where John was the co-director of the International School of Cosmic Ray Astrophysics. John had the good fortune to spend time in Antarctica, with his son Mark, working on a high energy physics experiment.
Beyond his academic achievements, John was a loving husband and father. He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra, his sons Paul (Katrina) of Urbana, Illinois and Mark (Christina) of Leavenworth, WA, five grandchildren (Aidan, Brianne, Cassie, Bridger, Cooper), a brother Peter, and his many friends, extended family and colleagues who will miss his warmth, generosity, and unyielding love for his family and his work.
A memorial service will be held on June 21st, 2025 at Grace Lutheran Church in Port Townsend. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 1120 Walker St., Port Townsend, WA 98368.
