Port Townsend

Maj (Ret) Jonathon Powell, USMC pilot, passed away on December 6, 2024, at the age of 65. He is survived by his mother, sister, brother, two sons, daughter, and 11 grandchildren.

Jon was born on July 16, 1959 to Darold and Dickey Powell in Port Angeles, Washington. Growing up there, he developed a love for running that would continue throughout most of his life, culminating in several marathons. He also led the winning team for several of the now world-famous Camp Pendleton Mud Runs.

Jon graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in psychology. After graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps and went on to flight school at Whiting Field, Florida. Upon graduating flight school, Jon went on to fly the Huey light attack helicopter at Camp Pendleton, CA. After his first assignment, Jon went to Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona to fly rescue helicopters and King Airs for transport of official personnel. Following that short tour, he returned to Camp Pendleton and landed back in the Huey. He completed several deployments on the USS Bella Wood and USS Tarawa and completed 20 years of honorable service in 2001.

After retirement Jon worked several different jobs, most notably as a Riverside County Sheriff and as a security manager on Indian Island.

Jon was not afraid of hard work and showed impressive fortitude in overcoming challenges throughout his life. Whether flying helicopters, memorizing penal codes, or working alongside his children on outdoor projects he showed an impressive drive and determination to get the job done to the best of his abilities. He continually pushed himself to be stronger and faster, branching out from marathons to triathlons and several Marine Corps strength challenges.

Jon was also known for his commitment, as he continued to provide for his family through many difficult times. He always kept a strong sense of humor no matter how difficult things were and is remembered especially for bringing laughter and joy to the dinner table.

Family and friends will gather to honor Jon’s life at Brigid's Loft in Port Townsend on 25 January 2025 following his graveside service.
