Richard Arthur Doherty, Md

February 3, 1933 — December 31, 2023

Seattle, Washington, December 31st, 2023 – With the passing of Dr. Richard “Rick” Doherty on December 31st, 2023, the world has lost a brilliant mind, a cherished father and friend, a prolific reader, and a passionate advocate for science and medicine. He leaves a legacy encompassing his love for science, literature, and meaningful connections.

Born February 3rd, 1933 on a farm in rural Maine, Rick lived up to his full head of red hair, challenging his family members, schoolmates, teachers and friends with his quick wit and mischievous nature. He worked on the farm and excelled in his studies in a one-room schoolhouse, then at Maine Central Institute and Bowdoin College. He earned an MD at Columbia University Medical School, after which he joined the faculty of Stanford University, then the University of Rochester (New York) as a professor of human genetics. He completed his career in 2000 as an investigator at the Foundation for Blood Research in Maine, and retired in Washington state. He was a remarkable thinker whose insatiable curiosity and quest for knowledge defined him.

He was also a remarkable friend who believed in the power of human connection and challenging conventional wisdom. His thought-provoking discussions, often intertwined with scientific wonders, were complemented by a clever wit and playful energy.

Rick is survived by his children, Stardust (spouse Ryakki Maxwell), Dan (Erika Walther), and Jen (James Benton), four grandchildren (Zach and Alex Benton, Abby and Sam Doherty), as well as niece Dierdre and nephew Dean Brown (Maridol) and Dean and Maridol’s children (Lara, Tessa, and David).
