Robert “Bob” Alvin Baker, beloved husband, father, papa, and friend to many, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2024, in Port Townsend, WA, at the age of 71, from an ongoing battle with cancer. Born on August 2,1953, in Tacoma, WA, Bob lived a life marked by service, skill, and a dedication to helping others.
At just 17, Bob joined the U.S. Navy shortly after graduating high school, where he proudly served as a Machinist Mate Third Class on the USS Joseph Strauss. He completed his service in 1974, bringing a lifelong spirit of patriotism and honor to his community and family.
On August 5, 1975, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Janice Williams, and together they built a life in Orting, WA. Their home was soon filled with love as they welcomed their two children, Corey and Dawn. A talented mechanic, Bob spent his career working for Washington Natural Gas for 23 years before moving onto other opportunities. He ended his career with Pierce County as the Fleet Supervisor, a role in which he was highly respected by his colleagues for his expertise, leadership, and dedication.
Bob's passion for adventure found a home with the Orting Bushwacker’s Jeep Club, where he and his best friends explored the rugged trails of the Pacific Northwest and even took on the California Rubicon Trail. Always tinkering, he could be found in his garage, rebuilding jeeps, trucks, scooters, cars and even cook trailers. Known by many as a “mechanical genius,” Bob was always willing to lend a hand, using his skills to help friends and neighbors with their vehicles.
When his son Corey began wrestling, Bob took on the role of assistant coach, guiding and mentoring young wrestlers. His impact extended beyond the wrestling mat, creating bonds and friendships.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Louise Baker; his brother, William Sathe; and his sisters, Linda Covington and Jean Hartle. He is survived by his wife, Janice; his son, Corey (Kiley); his daughter, Dawn; and his grandchildren, Tyler, Maxwell, Niko, Lita, and Nixon. He is also survived by one sister, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In 2003, Bob and Jan moved to the Olympic Peninsula, where Bob’s love for the outdoors continued. He enjoyed clam digging on the beaches of Ocean Shores and pursued a new passion for mini bikes, meticulously rebuilding vintage bikes while Jan crafted seat covers—a testament to their enduring teamwork and love.
In recent years, Bob and Janice completed their retirement home in a welcoming community in Port Hadlock, WA, where Bob quickly became known for his kindness and generosity. He was the neighbor everyone could count on, often seen mowing everyone’s lawn around the neighborhood and stopping for friendly chats. With a special kindness for those who needed help, Bob frequently assisted elderly neighbors with home repairs or tasks, driven by a deep desire to help others. He also found a close-knit circle of friends at Papa’s Small Engine Repair Shop, where his skills and friendship earned him a permanent spot: a bench dedicated in his honor. It became a gathering place for laughter, stories, and memories—a testament to the friendships he formed and the lasting impact he had on those around him.
No formal funeral arrangements have been made, but a celebration of Bob’s life will be held in the near future after the holidays. Friends and family will be invited to gather and share memories of his kindness, generosity, and many talents. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice in Bob’s honor.
